August 4th 2009I
collected the boiler from the Guildford Model Engineering Show as
arranged with Andy along with the smokebox and fittings for kit 8.
There are still some pieces to come and I don't as yet have any
instructions.
This
kit consists of the boiler with the regulator already fitted, the
superheater, firebox door, blowdown valve, blower pipe and
the front buffer beam and buffer assembly .This is a picture of the pieces I have so far.

Still
waiting for the missing parts and the instructions. In the
meantime I have fitted gaskets to the regulator housing and the steam
dome cap, as well as fettling the firebox door so that it will close
and latch properly. Also had to cut the bolts down as the threads
in the boiler backplate were not deep enough. Decided to go ahead
and paint the backhead - just for something to do!

Just
in time for the Bank Holiday, a large box arrived from Andy containing
the missing bits from kits 7 & 8, plus most of kit 9, and some of
kit 10. See the following pages for details.
All that was missing in kit 7 was the superheater with its banjo bolt fitting and the draindown valve. I
had received the instructions from Geerlig a few days before and knew
that all I had to do was fit the drain down valve, fit the superheater
and put the packing in behind the regulator stuffing nut. Fitting the drain down valve, and packing the regulator, was the work of a few minutes each.
When
the superheater and banjo bolt arrived, I did a trial fit in the boiler
tube and found that the crimped end was very slightly too big. I was going to file it down
but checked with Andy first who advised that I should gently tap the
sides of the crimp with a small hammer until it fitted. The
copper was still very soft from the brazing and after just a few light
taps, it slid nicely into the boiler tube.
Here's a pic of the finished boiler backhead with the drain down valve fitted.. And that's about it for kit 7. Follow the link to kits 8, 9 and 10.
